[Demeisen has to assume this kid must have led a very sheltered and risk-free life up until this point, except for the friend he apparently used to have who was… what? A predator who killed other people, but not him? This tracks as exactly the sort of thing overly bored people with a fascination for danger might get involved with, and doesn’t necessarily disabuse him of the idea that Flat is too dense to understand what he’s signing up for.

Which, frankly, is not really Demeisen’s problem, as long as he doesn’t insist on getting involved—and he certainly doesn’t insist. Flat can do what he likes, even if it means waltzing out the door and into the arms of monsters.
