[Demeisen can’t even be surprised by how slow on the uptake this kid is at this point. Perhaps he was too busy trying to make a new friend to pay attention to most of what Demeisen was saying up until this point, which frankly seems likely to him.
The question is… what should Demeisen tell this kid? He hasn’t hesitated to tell the truth to everyone else he’s met so far, but he suspects he could tell Flat just about anything, and his answer would be to excitedly ask him inane questions about it. Maybe he should make something up, if he’s going to swallow whatever answer gets put in front of him.
Except that this is unquestionably a situation where the truth is stranger than fiction, at least to the rubes he’s met in this backwater world. Even if he wanted to tell Flat exactly what he wanted to hear, he wouldn’t need to lie to him at all.
