( marc has never been much of a conversationalist at the best of times, and so it doesn't occur to him that lottie's lack of response is anything to do with how he is or anything out of the ordinary. it doesn't occur to him — won't occur to him — that he's making this awkward or difficult for her in any shape or form. he'll assume, instead, that this is just what she does: go to the tree with snacks, lead people out and not be especially talkative.
