( marc's wants aren't a million miles away from cassian's: he wants to do better and be better, he wants to leave the world in a better state than he'd found it, but it's difficult to do that when, simultaneously, there's so much he needs to atone for first. it's difficult to do, too, when he doesn't always notice the line until he's crossed it.

but he tries.

he hums in mild acknowledgement at cassian's response — 'huh' — as if offense hasn't occurred to marc at all (it hadn't). ) There's a lot of people out there who think that it's not possible to do good ( 'good' is accompanied by a constrained handwave ) if there's anything objectionable sitting alongside it. ( as if being aware of that fact — that people aren't perfect and don't make perfect choices and decisions all of the time, that doing good and being good aren't one and the same — means that a decision made because it seems like the right decision or the best decision is any less because of it.

it's a concept marc's always struggled with and he's always applied it in a different manner to himself than he has to others. ) Or they just think that that a difference in opinion is a moral judgement. ( marc's not naive enough to think that it can't be a moral judgement and that there aren't those who do use it as such, but not everyone. ) Either way, it's not exactly promising.
