[He holds up one finger, miming a semicircle around it with his other hand.]
In ancient times, before the world as it was known existed, it was shattered into fourteen pieces. Each time a great Calamity happened, one of those "pieces" was lost, reabsorbed into the Source. This was not to be celebrated; each time it happened, an entire star's worth of people were murdered. When the Source was lost to Oblivion, the remaining six fell with it.
Thousands of years ago, there was a civilization brought to ruin. It happened because the first ruler of it was brought back to life, to bring glory back to the Empire. Preoccupied with remembering his own death, he instead brought about a Calamity.
What would happen if every soul on those worlds were revived, all remembering their deaths? What of a universe's amount of people? It's better to let the dead rest, and forge ahead for those yet to be born.

When my world fell, it didn't fall alone.
