Even back on Terra Ernesto had always wanted to return to BolĂvar one day, and try and help build his broken country into something where people could live peacefully.
Terra as a whole was a mess, and Ernesto couldn't exactly blame people for wanting to start over from scratch. It's hard to say how long they could all even continue given the state their world was in.
But Ernesto wasn't ready to give up on it, even if he hadn't signed on with Meridian because of his own suspicions of hidden motivations.
At the same time, what Gavial's saying resonates with him, because whatever lofty goals these two factions have, at the end of the day the best they could do was help the people immediately in front of them. ]
It seems like they've been at this for awhile now, so I bet you'd have plenty of time to try and make sense of it all.
