[Byleth always came to these gatherings in Springstar just for the sole fact that there was free food to be had. With his trusty satchel attached to his belt, empty and ready to be filled with all manner of cakes and pastries and everything else in between, Byleth's focus was more on the table's spread than the people loitering by them. After experiencing two of these events, he had become resigned to the fact that Jeralt may not be coming after all, so didn't bother to seek anyone out and inevitably disappoint himself.
Which meant that as Yuri hovered by the pastries, clearly wrestling with himself on whether or not to risk potential poisoning, Byleth just stepped right up to him with a quick side-glance, clearly not immediately registering his face as he turned away and reached out for the pastry-
-only to comically snap his head back round a split second later when he actually processed who he had just briefly locked eyes with. Yuri, the infamous crime lord and another fellow Fódlan native... here, watching him about to steal pastries in broad daylight (he felt no shame about this). It was such an unexpected sight that Byleth internally reeled for a good solid second, staring like an idiot with pastry in hand before he blurted the first thing to come to mind:]
